Gyula is located in the southeastern region of Hungary, in the county of Békés, and is the second most populous town in the count. History reloaded This more than 600-year-old fortification, used to be one of the three strongest forts in the country, along with the castles of Eger and Szigetvár. When the Turks attacked the castle, 2000 soldiers fought heroically for an unprecedented 62 days against a huge Turkish army. In 1566 the castle was eventually occupied by the Turks. Visitors can ring the bell of the Chapel in honour of the heroes of the siege. With the aid of interactive digital devices, you can reconstruct and visualise the siege and the layout of the 16th century castle.

Since 1964, the theater has been operating in the courtyard of the brick castle, on the lake stage, in the chamber theater, and in various parts of the city. The theater’s performances provide entertainment for audiences of all ages and interests, whether it’s a lively musical production or a drama. The Almásy Mansion is the first one in Hungary to host a theatrical play in as early as 1746. Several generations of the Erkel family held recitals here, and Ferenc Erkel composed parts of several of his operas in the park of the Almásy Palace. Ten of the thirteen martyrs of Arad laid down their arms here. It was here that Mihály Munkácsy first became acquainted with the art of painting. The exhibition uses state-of-the-art interactive technology to reveal fascinating details and secrets of the daily lives of the aristocrats and staff who once lived here. On November 7, 1810, Ferenc Erkel was born in Gyula, the creator of the Hungarian national opera and composer of the national anthem.
